Cargill cutting 5% of global workforce as 8,000 employees laid off

Star Tribune reports following a fall in profits, Minnetonka-based Cargill will lay off 8,000 employees, or 5% of its global workforce, with most cuts happening before the end of the year. “Cargill is looking to buoy its margins and “maximize our competitiveness” by cutting costs as part of a 2030 plan.”

Fox9 reports the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has unlocked the phone of Winston Smith Jr. who was fatally shot by law enforcement in Minneapolis in 2021. The BCA has obtained a video that Smith was recording at the time of his death and sent it to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review.

St. Cloud Times reports Hudda Ibrahim will be the first Somali American to serve on St. Cloud’s City Council. Ibrahim was appointed to a vacant Ward 3 seat during Monday’s meeting.

Via KSTP: “The Hotel Ivy and its management company are being sued, accused of playing an “integral role” in a sex trafficking scheme that ended in the conviction of Anton Lazzaro.

The man federal prosecutors dubbed “Minnesota’s Jeffrey Epstein” was convicted of sex trafficking of minors in 2023. He’s currently serving a 21-year prison sentence.”

MPR reports a federal judge has denied a compassionate release request for a former St. Paul police officer. “In late 2019 a jury convicted (Brett) Palkowitch, 37, for a 2016 incident in which he kicked Frank Baker as a K-9 mauled his leg when officers mistook Baker for a robbery suspect.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey wrote an op-ed in the Star Tribune saying that a swing further left in the wake of Donald Trump’s win would be “counterproductive” and laid a roadmap for how other cities could look to Minneapolis to run an effective government.

“Not every issue can or should be addressed by city government, but we can — and must — do a better job at delivering core services. Minneapolis should be a beacon for practical, effective and equitable governance.”
